PAD1 is a flavin mononucleotide (FMN)-containing protein. It catalyzes the formation of a novel, diffusible cofactor required by phenacrylic acid acid decarboxylase (FDC) for decarboxylase activity.

The cofactor is a modified form of reduced FMN, but it's structure is not yet known [Lin15].
